Effects of Diet on the Plasma Chlorides and Chloride Excretion in the Dog

چکیده
In the st,udy of the plasma chlorides in a series of ncphritics Wolferth (1) recently called attention to the low figures occasionally obsc>rved in certain cases. As a rule, this finding was noted in patients lvho had been for some time upon a chloride-free diet This observation we (2) have confirmed and have found the plasma chlorides as low as 3.6 gm. per liter in one case of advanced glomcruloncphritis, 5 days before death. That this marked depression of t,hc plasma chlorides might be merely the result of a long continued low chloride diet. combined with a rather free administ, ration of water seemed t,o us possible in spite of the well rccognizctd tcndcncy of tho blood to maintain constant its inorganic composition. It was observed that in other casts wit.11 chronic nephritis, especially those of the so called parenchymat, ous type, which exhibited a tendency to elevation of the plasma chlorides, even a prolonged period of low salt diet did not bring the plasma chlorides below normal or often even to the normal figure. These*, however, do not afford sat,&factory evidence of the effect of a continued low chloride diet on the plasma in other discaces of the kidneys or mhcn the kidneys are normal. In ordtlr to obtain some data upon the point the following expcrimcnts were carried out upon dogs. The animals were placed upon one of three diets; an ordinary diet! a diet with a high sodium chloride content, or a diet poor in sodium chloride and with a free administration of distilled water. Chloride Retention in Experimental Hydronephrosis
1. In acute experimental hydronephrosis chloride retention occurs as well as retention of water, urea, and phenolsulfonephthalein. 2. If both water and chlorides are retained there may be no appreciable rise in the plasma chloride content. 3. When chlorides are retained, but not water, the chloride content of the plasma rises strikingly. 4. After the removal of the ureteral obstruction in acute...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Chlorides in the Blood of the Dog after Experimental Intestinal Obstruction
THE RESULTS OF SIMULTANEOUS CHLORIDE DETERMINATIONS IN WHOLE BLOOD, IN PLASMA, AND IN CELLS OF THE DOG AFTER EXPERIMENTAL INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION ARE PRESENTED, AND THE CHLORIDE CONTENT OF WHOLE BLOOD AND OF PLASMA IS COMPARED BY TWO METHODS OF ESTIMATION: the iodometric titration on protein-free filtrate, and the digestion technique of Van Slyke. The chloride as determined on protein-free filtr...

One of the important abiotic stresses that negatively affect cereals such as wheat is heavy metals. Soil pollution with heavy metals has become one of the major environmental concerns resulting from the industrial development and use of fertilizers containing heavy metals. One way to counteract the negative effects of heavy metals in plants which produce reactive oxygen species is the activatio...
متن کاملThe Numerical Laws Governing the Rate of Excretion of Urea and Chlorides in Man
1. The excretion of urea and of chlorides in the normal individual is carried out according to definite laws, capable of numerical expression. 2. The rate of excretion of urea and of sodium chloride is determined by the concentration in the blood, the rate of water output, and indirectly by the weight of the individual. 3. The threshold of sodium chloride excretion is practically constant at ab...
